Personal style is something I always thought I had in spades.
However, the more I think about it, the more I realise that while I do have a rather stylish wardrobe (if I may say so myself), I find it hard to just stick to one style. Personal style is something that belongs to you, something that you take pride in. But, I always thought that it is fun to do something out of the box every now and then.
I’ve always admired Audrey Hepburn, and I’d have to say that she is my ultimate style icon. I look up to her, not just because of her style sense, but because of the work she did for Unicef. But, I don’t always dress like her. And that is ok. I do love how Audrey wore little sleeveless dresses, or trousers and white blouses and flats. And I do have plenty of those in my wardrobe. The point I’m trying to make though, is why should I just stick to one look for the rest of my life?
I like having a boho chic kind of day sometimes.
Or wearing trousers and looking very business like.
Other days I go back to my roots of miniskirts.
Maybe personal style doesn’t mean just sticking to one look, or style. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve changed up my look and wardrobe over the years (although there is one constant in my wardrobe and that is vintage dresses – I will never get rid of them!).
“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak” – Rachel Zoe.
A lot of people follow the trends, the things that are being introduced on the catwalk four times a year. What is wrong with that? I definitely take ideas and inspiration from the trends that occur every year. And, like I’ve said in a previous post, fashion is very cyclical. Like, this year is quite 80s inspired, so I’m really tempted to go through my mum’s old clothes from the 80s and pull out things from there to wear.
“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” – Coco Chanel
In this day and age of fast fashion, instagram, social media, it is so easy to be lost in the crowd. Which is why I think it’s so important to stand out. I was always told, by my mum (wise woman she is), to dress up every time you go out. You never know what will happen, you don’t know who you will meet or see, so it’s important to look your best every time you step out the door. Which is great, because I love dressing up and feeling 100% amazing!
So, what are your thoughts on personal style? Do you have one look that you just stick to, or do you enjoy trying different looks?
